Blood Donor, NOT!

This is going to be a public service announcement. Gotta do it.

I am sitting here in disbelief. I just got some news that has me mind-boggled. I have given blood since I was in my 20's. I was on the donor list for bone marrow. I was tossed off the bone marrow list after my angioplasty because they won't let you donate if you have had anything like that because they have to knock you out and they won't do it. I have continued to gove blood, though because My blood was ok. But getting back to the real story here, I have given at least 3 gallons of blood in the past 20-plus years.

I am now on Lipitor for high cholestrol. (It is now down from 228 to 175, thanks for asking). Well every 3 or four months for the first year I'm on it, the doctor runs a blood screening on me to make sure it isn't screwing up my liver. This is standard procedure. Cholestrol lowering drugs can mess you up if you already have any liver problems. I don't and all tests so far have been fine. Well eveidently, the lab wasn't sure if my doctor wanted just the liver enzyme test (which he did) or if he wanted a full liver screening. So they did both. Here's where it gets weird.

Back when I was 7 or 8, two of my older brothers and an older sister contracted Hepititis A. The rest of us, including my mother never got it. Or so I thought. My screening showed that I did have it. I evidently got over it without any medication and went on never knowing until now. So that means that anyone could have had it as a child and not known it.

The whole purpose of this is the let everyone know that if you are going to be a blood donor, get this test first. You cannot give blood if you have ever had Hepititis A. I am sitting here feeling guilt beyond belief right now. I can only pray that I have never infected anyone, and that they tested for that before they used it and threw mine out. I will never know. 20 years ago, I don't know if they even had the test for finding it in the blood.

I have to go run now and research what damage I may have caused. I know it isn't my fault, but somehow that doesn't make it any easier.

Later...

Later,
Cosmic
